Viareggio is known not only as a seaside resort, for the Carnival, born nel1873, with its majestic papier-mâché floats that parade along the "Promenade". The official mask of the Carnival of Viareggio is Burlamacco, invented in 1930 by Uberto Bonetti. During the event, of great importance, there are also side neighborhood festivals that usually take place from Friday to Sunday.

From an artistic point of view, Viareggio is known for its eclectic architecture, Art Nouveau and Art Deco and for being the city of artists like Lorenzo Viani, Federico Bagnoli, Alfredo Catarsini, Renato Santini, Mario Marcucci, Eugenio Pardini, Inachos Biancalana, Galileo Chini, Alfredo Belluomini, Giorgio Michetti and Luisa Cellai.

Viareggio is located approximately 25 km from the cities of Pisa and Lucca and close to the natural environments of great value as the Apuan Alps (since 1985, the Regional Natural Park of the Apuan Alps), the Massaciuccoli lake, the natural park of Migliarino, San Rossore Massaciuccoli and the sanctuary of cetaceans. Every city and surrounding country is worthy of note, in the inland hill towns are incredible historical sites such as the medieval churches. Viareggio, finally, is about 97 km from Florence.
