Monterosso al Mare is part of the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO heritage, and is the most populous of the five.
Monterosso al Mare is located in the center of a small natural bay, protected by a small artificial reef, east of Punta Masco in the Riviera and La Spezia. It forms the westernmost part delleCinque Terre.
To the west of the original village, beyond the hills of the Cappuccini, it is the village of Fegina, natural expansion and relatively modern characterized by a tourist resort facility compared to the old village which is reachable through a tunnel of a few tens of meters. A Fegina the local railway station is located, and there are the relatively more extensive beaches, with respect to the narrow cliffs that characterize the other villages of the Cinque Terre.
Monterosso al Mare is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and the sea around the coast is within a protected marine area Cinque Terre.
