In this day trip we visit Mylapore the cultural hot spot of Chennai which used to trade pepper and fine cloth with Rome for gold! Mylapore is home to the magnificent Kapaleeswar temple, the 7th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.. We also visit San Thome Basilica which was built in neo gothic style by the Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. The other experience includes Ramakrishna Math the monastic organization and Fort Saint George which provides a vivid history of how the East India Company came as traders and became the rulers of India.
At 7am our tour guide will meet and pick you up to commence the Chennai cultural tour of Mylapore & Fort St George. We head towards Mylapore an ancient residential neighborhood of Chennai and a cultural hot spot today. It history goes back to Roman times when it used to trade pepper and fine cloth with Rome for Gold! It was occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fell into the hands of the British till India’s independence in 1947.
We visit the magnificent Kapaleeshwar temple. Built in the 7th century this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in Dravidian style architecture it has a towering “Gopuram”. Guests can expect a mesmerizing experience of rituals and serenity inside the temple.
11-12PM- We visit the famous San Thome Basilica, the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. Built in neo gothic style it was built by the Portuguese explorers in the 16th century.
Lunch is organised in a traditional south indian restaurant at 1PM.
2-3PM-We visit a unique monastic organization called Ramakrishna Math, dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna the 19th century saint. Guests will get to see the universal temple, the shrine, a beautiful Mantapam, a multimedia museum and an enchanting library.
3-4PM- This leg of the tour takes us to Fort Saint George, the first English Fortress built in 1644 by the East India Company. We will visit St Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church of India. Another interesting structure to be visited here is the Wellesley house, which has a Banqueting Hall holding some rare paintings. We will also visit a quaint museum rich with relics of the colonial times.
5PM-This culture tour and day trip from Chennai ends by 5 PM after drop back to hotel.
