Riga's Central Market is one of the largest covered market places in Europe, functioning largely unchanged since opening way back in 1930. Some 70,000 people, a 10th of Riga's population can visit in a single day. This makes it the perfect place to discover the food culture of the city and the country.
On this 2 hour guided tour through the market halls you will learn about the market's unique design history, the different seasonal and local products on sale, and how the food sold the stalls helps to explain Latvian culture and Riga's history. Traditional foods are on display such a rye breads, fresh cheeses, smoked meats, jellied lamprey and pickled everything. Depending on the season, you'll find rare items like wild strawberries, forest mushrooms or birch juice.
Along the way your guide will happily answer any questions you may have, before the tour finishes in a lovely cafe hidden in a restored warehouse building. You'll have a sit-down tasting session of fresh products from the market, traditional foods and some items quite unique to Latvia.
