Enjoy a scenic drive over the Rimutaka Ranges including a short stop at the Summit before descending into the Wairarapa region.
The first tasting stop is at Murdoch James Estate for their Grape to Glass Wine Tour. Starting in the vineyard, you will look at the unique soil profile and macro climate of the vineyard. Depending on the season you may examine how the vines are pruned and the canopy is managed to produce optimum fruit quality and even taste the grapes (March/April), before they are handpicked and transported to the winery. In the winery you look at the differences in white wine and red wine production. You may even get to plunge some red grape skins into their ferment - hopefully with the aid of a hand-held plunger, but if it's a big year, you'll have to get in with your feet! From the winery you travel down to the underground barrel caves where all of the red wines are aged in different French oak barrels - providing a colour palate of about 200 different flavours. Taste the red wines in the caves and discover the differences of new and old French oak, and their influence in wine flavour, texture and development. The winery tour concludes in the tasting room where you can continue to enjoy tasting a range of Murdoch James Estate wines.
Lunch (mains and a drink) will be served at a vineyard restaurant overlooking the spectacular country side of the Martinborough wine growing region
Our third tasting stop allows you to wander amongst the oldest olive trees in Martinborough, learning about the different olive varieties and what happens throughout the olive year. Progress to the tasting room where you will learn how to taste olive oil like a professional, and how to use extra virgin olive oil and the full range of infused oils in quick, easy and spectacular recipes.
Next stop is a craft beer tasting paddle at Martinborough Brewery. These paddles consist of your choice of any 4 of the 8 taps on offer. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays our craft beer tasting occurs just around the corner at the historical Martinborough Hotel.
As we head back to Wellington our final stop is at C'est Cheese in Featherston for a range of fantastic local and imported cheeses and gourmet foods.
Drop off at 430pm-500pm at Wellington i-SITE, cruise ships or centrally located accommodation providers.
