Embark on this challenging 6-day trek to Kilimanjaro with a small-group of no more than 15. The trek takes you through well-defined altitudinal vegetation zones, from semi-arid scrub to dense cloud forest. Walking roughly 60 kilometers, start from Marangu Gate and gradually climb higher, with night stops, to reach Gillman’s Point and finally Uhuru Peak, the actual summit.
Day 1: Mandara Hut (L,D)
Meet your guide and driver at the central meeting point, then drive about 2-hours through Kilimanjaro in the morning to the semi-tropical foothills to Marangu area. As you drive, admire the view of the snow-capped peak of the mountain. Upon your arrival at Marangu gate, meet your team of guides and porters, pick up any last minute supplies for the trek, and head to the entrance of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park to register for the climb.
Take about a 4-5 hour walk through patches of a coffee plantation and dense rainforest to Mandara Hut. Observe the various monkeys, exotic birds, and astonishing flora. If the skies are clear you may have fine views over the town of Moshi lying at the boundary of the plain far underneath. Arrive at Mandara Hut, a collection of basic, A-frame mountain huts with bunk beds where you inevitably meet up with fellow trekkers who are bent on the same goal.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Horombo Hut (B,L,D)
Begin the day with a steep climb all the way through the last area of rain forest. Make your way to the Horombo Huts, another collection of buildings similar in style to those at Mandara.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Horombo Hut (B,L,D)
Spend the day at your leisure exploring the rain forest and getting in touch with nature so that you may increase your changes of making it to the summit.
Overnight: Horomobo Hut
Day 4: Kibo Hut (B,L,D)
Trek the rocky and uneven countryside as you observe giant groundsels and lobelias in the sparse moorland.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Uhuru Peaks (B,L,D)
Awaken just after midnight and begin your journey by zigzagging up a long scree slope, using the light of your torch to guide the way up the Uhuru Peaks. Afterwards, make the 3-hour trek back down past Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut for a well deserved rest.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 6: Return to Arusha (B,L)
Continue your triumphant return back down across an alpine meadow and past the Mandara Hut. Go through the rain forest to Marangu Gate where you will board an awaiting vehicle and begin your journey back to Arusha.
