The exhibition occupies the premises of the tardosettecentesco Bourbon prison, built by the architect Sakala Christmas Bonaiuto and rare example of 18th-century prison architecture. The museums are derived from Cabinet of natural history and Archaeology wanted in 1843 by Emanuele Taranto and rebuilt in 1914 by Fr. Luigi Sturzo. The collections are divided into an archaeological section and a picture gallery: the latter presents a collection of high-quality paintings, testimony to the rich artistic activities of the city, and a collection of historical works which make it possible to grasp the role of Universitas in religious and civil life. Significant are the collection of privileges granted to the city from the Norman period, and that of the paintings of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, with works by The Jacono, Ciardi, Caprile, Bazzaro, Nitti, Esposito, Corrado and others. In the nearby palazzo Libertines are hosted services offered to the public: archives, library, laboratory, didactic room folklore heritage, restoration laboratory
