SIENA CATHEDRAL, PICCOLOMINI LIBRARY AND

Piazza del Duomo (Siena)

Oggi: 10:30 AM-5:30 PM

The first environment inside the Cathedral to be transformed into a museum was the Piccolomini library, built starting in 1492 by order of Cardinal Francesco Piccolomini Todeschini to guard the book heritage of Pope Pius II and decorated with frescoes by Pinturicchio (early 16th century) depicting the life of Pope Pius II, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, which exposes large illuminated antifonari (15th-16th century). For some years throughout the Cathedral as a whole was musealizzata. The entrance, with payment of the ticket, is through the left door of the façade and allows you to visit the beautiful interior of the great architectural complex with various works of art that adorn: the marble floor inlays, the pulpit by Nicola Pisano, the statue of St. John the Baptist by Donatello, the Piccolomini monument with some sculptures of the young Michelangelo, Bernini's Chigi Chapel , and other works
