CELIO ROMAN HOUSES

CLIVO DI SCAURO, (Rome)

Oggi: Chiuso

With the definition of Celio Roman houses means the remains of a Roman apartment complex beneath the Basilica of Saints John and Paul in Rome, in the rione Celio.
Tradition identifies this place with the House in which the Ss John and Paul lived and were buried, after having suffered martyrdom during the reign of Julian the apostate (361-363 ad).
The archaeological complex, discovered in 1887 by Padre Germano of St. Stanislaus, Rector of the Basilica of SS. Giovanni e Paolo al Celio still officiated Passionist fathers, reveals a fascinating journey through more than 20 underground environments on various levels, partly frescoed with paintings dating from the 3rd century AD and the middle ages.
The core consists of a domus on two levels, in the 2nd century AD, occupied by a private thermal baths (balneum) downstairs and an insula, characteristic building popular with a porch and street level taberne and homes on the upper floors, built in the early 3rd century a.d. along the Clivus Scauri.
The different units were joined together during the 3rd century AD by a single owner and transformed into an elegant domus with pagan representative environments decorated with valuable frescoes.
The extraordinary archaeological stratification and the excellent condition of the facilities is already outside, since the existing perimeter wall of the early Christian Church has incorporated the façade of ancient insula, which recognize the arched porch along the Clivus Scauri, and two Windows on the upper floors.
