It is one of the baroque churches of Rome, built between 1644 and 1650 by Cardinal Mazarin. It is known by the Romans as the Church of Canneto, because the façade is overcharged by as much as 18 columns, which make it resemble to a reed bed. Cardinal Mazarin had on its tympanum teaches, but wanted to put even the bust of his nephew, a unique case in Rome of statue with the face of a secular. Also the presence of two statues of naked breast woman present in the façade are unique examples in Rome. Inside the headstones are here remember apse preserves precordi, part of the embalmed heart of almost all Popes from Pope Sixtus V until Pope Leo XIII.
