The basilica of the Annunciation is the main shrine of Florence, mother house of the order served. The Church is located in the homonymous square in the North-East of the city centre, near the Spedale degli Innocenti.
The mystery of the face of the Madonna painted by an Angel (Madonna or faceless)
In 1252, according to legend, the servants of Mary wanted to paint the fresco of their glorious Virgin, the Annunciation, by a painter named Bartholomew, who put all his expertise to represent worthily the scene. But despite several attempts, was taken by mistrust because he could not paint the face of the Virgin. So fell into a strange and drowsiness on waking, by some miracle, the face appeared already painted, completed by an Angel. The fresco which in later times will give the Church its name, still preserved in the chapel of the Annunciation, soon became the object of great veneration and deep devotion by the Florentines.
