Galleria Umberto I

via San Carlo (Naples)

The Galleria Umberto I is a shopping arcade built in Naples between 1887 and 1890. The Gallery has hosted in 1886 the first movie theater in the city, as well as one of the first in Italy, commissioned by padovano Mario Recanati, where they screened early films of the Lumière brothers.

The Gallery is used every year to welcome the National Christmas tree, on which, as ritual, are affixed to the letters of "desire" and "hope" citizens.
