The sea Museum is housed in the halls of Palazzo Appiani, former residence of the Lords of Piombino. Founded in 1985 on the initiative of the municipality and the Institute of biology and marine ecology of Piombino, aims to study and monitor the marine environment in the Mediterranean.
The Museum is part of the project of valorization of the castle of Piombino, began with the restoration of the imposing structures, carried out in 1999-2001, preceded by various archaeological excavations. The Museum plans to rebuild and connect the history of Piombino to the Castle, the oldest monument in the city. Ceramic and metallic artefacts, panels, graphic reconstructions, computer workstations and video guide the visitor to discover the past of this seaside town and a whole territory. The Museum represents the completion of the visit of the Cathedral Church of Sant'Antimo, itself a caretaker of works of art of great interest. The collection of the Museum devotes significant space to sculpture with marble and wooden works and exhibition of liturgical objects. Particular emphasis is given to the Florentine artist Andrea Guardi (1415-20-1478 posts) which are still preserved in the Cathedral marble works.
