Castle of the counts of Modica

The Castle of the Counts of Modica (or Castle of Alcamo) is a medieval castle situated in the town centre of Alcamo (in the province of Trapani).

History


The construction of the castle was started by the Peralta family at about 1340 and was finished in 1350, under the feudatories Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte, who used it as a mansion and a defensive structure.
In 1392 king Martino and his wife were hosted in the castle after the Chiaramontes' defeat.
In 1534 the castle was attacked by the Islamic pirate Barbarossa.

The castle of Ventimiglia (or castle of Bonifato) is an ancient four towers castle which was built at the end of the 14th century by the Ventimiglia family on the top of Mount Bonifato near Alcamo (inside Nature Reserve Bosco di Alcamo).

Historical hints

Enrico Ventimiglia, the son of Guarnieri Ventimiglia whom he succeeded to, declared that he had this castle built on Mount Bonifato as a protection from possible attacks. According to different interpretations, the castle, instead, would date back to an anterior period.

Calatubo Castle

The Calatubo Castle (Latin: catrum Calathatubi; Arabic: قلعة ﺍوبي - Qal'at 'Awbi; Italian: Castello di Calatubo) is an ancient fortress that is located near the town of Alcamo (in Sicily).
The site has remains of a settlement of the Elymians and a necropolis.
Being next to A29 motorway, it attracts the curiosity of travellers because of its imposing mass; however, it is unknown to most people today, and has fallen into disrepair, although the Town Council of Alcamo has often expressed the desire to recover it. The church of Our Lady of the Star (in Italian Santa Maria della Stella, originally called Santa Maria della Misericordia) is a church, now totally abandoned, located in Alcamo, in the province of Trapani, and more precisely in the old quarter of San Vito (or "quarter of the Fountain").

The church of Saint Mary of Jesus is a catholic church located in Alcamo, in province of Trapani.

According to some sources, the church of Saint Mary of Jesus was founded at about 1450 by the Blessed Arcangelo Placenza from Calatafimi, after the foundation of the adjoining monastery of padri Minori Osservanti (called "Friary of Saint Mary of Jesus") by the same Blessed Arcangelo after the mandate of the Blessed Matteo Guimerà of Agrigento. The Basilica of Our Lady's Assumption (also called mother church) is a 14th-century basilica in Alcamo (in the Italian province of Trapani) named after the Assumption. It is situated in the very town centre, near Piazza Ciullo.
