The Caltanissetta archive was established as a result of provincial organic law 1° ag. 1843 and became, with the r.d. 22 Sept. 1932, no. 1391, provincial Archive; with l. 22 Dec. 1939, n. 2006, assumed the name of State Archives section and with the Sept. 30 d.p.r. 1963, n. 1409, to State archives. Until 1951 the Caltanissetta section picked up the documents of the province of Enna, in which only that year was established a section of the store. The Cathedral of Caltanissetta, situated in the historical centre of the city, was built between the years 1560-1620 and was opened to the public in 1622. Was entitled so to distinguish it from the mother church, built in the 16th century at the foot of the fortress of Pietrarossa, and was consequently nicknamed "Vallejo".
The Church of Sant'Agata in the College was built between 1600 and 1610 on a pre-existing Church, also dedicated to Sant'Agata, while the work of the adjacent Jesuit College (from which the Church is named) began in 1589 and ended only in the second half of the 19th century. The Church, with a Greek cross plant, is certainly one of the richest of the city. The College houses the Biblioteca Comunale Luciano Sadiq and the Liceo Musicale.
