Explore historic towns outside Belgrade on this 8-hour small-group tour. Visit Topola and Oplenac to learn more about the history of the region, even stopping at The Museum in Topola. Then visit Winery Aleksandrović for a wine tasting before enjoying some delicious local cuisine for lunch.
This small-group tour (for up to 8 people) operates only on Wednesdays, all year round.
The central part of the tour is Topola, a small town rich in history, at just 80 kilometers from Belgrade. The area you will visit was the birthplace of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule two centuries ago. It was a seed which in years to come developed into the modern Serbian state. Karadjordje Petrovic, the leader of the Uprising was born in Topola, he was also a founder of the Karadjordjevic dynasty that ruled Serbia for decades.
Your first stop in exploration of Topola is the Museum dedicated to the life of Karadjordje and the Uprising he led. The Museum is situated in the remains of what used to be a small fortress known as Karadjordje’s Town.
From Karadjordje’s Town, move up to the top of nearby Oplenac hill where you will pay a visit to the gorgeous mausoleum of the Karadjordjevic family - Saint George’s Church. Twenty seven members of the royal family were buried in the crypt of this church. But what is most fascinating about it is a breathtaking mosaic decoration of the interior which consists of 40 million pieces in 15,000 shades, depicting the best known frescoes from Serbian medieval monasteries. While at Oplenac, do not miss the opportunity to visit the 85-year old Royal winery, which is now a museum, originally built by German builders and equipped with top French production lines at the time.
After the descent from Oplenac, leaving historic tales behind, your trip continues further to the nearby village of Vinča and one of Serbia's finest wineries - Winery Aleksandrović. But talking about wines, seeing the oak barrels and bottle filling lines, is all just warm up for the best part - wine tasting!
And at the very end, continue on towards the neighboring town of Aranđelovac, to one of several ethnic restaurants where delicious local cuisine is served in authentic Šumadija ambience. After lunch, return to Belgrade.
