Experience a day in the middle of nature on one of the highest roads in Romania. Travel to the Transfagarasan Highway on this 12-hour guided tour from Bucharest. In a small group of no more than 15, spend quality time in a beautiful mountain landscape and explore such attractions as the Curtea de Arges Monastery and Balea Lake.
Your day begins with an 8am pickup from your Bucharest hotel. Greet your driver-guide, climb aboard the comfortable minivan, and begin your journey toward the Fagaras Mountains, some of the biggest in Romania, also known as the Transylvanian Alps.
Yur first stop is in the town Curtea de Arges, nestled at the bottom of the Fagaras Mountains. Here you visit one of the most remarkable monasteries in Romania, which dates from the 18th century and resembles a stone fortress. Next, make a new stop at the foot of the Poenari Citadel, a stronghold that became famous due to the legend of Dracula.
Enter Romania's most beautiful road, named by the television show Top Gear as "the best road in the world." The Transfagarasan is the second-highest road in Romania, reaching as high as to 6,673 feet (2,034 meters) at Balea Lake. Here you have an hour and a half break to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. You can take a hike around the area or, at your own expense, take a cable car trip between Balea Lake and Balea Waterfall or have lunch in one of the chalets.
Having soaked up some magnificent views, and feeling energized, relax on the drive back to Bucharest. Your tour concludes with a drop-off back at your hotel at around 8pm.
